Dr. Marcia Hefker, PMHNP-BC, FNP-BC
Owner and Executive Director, RxTeq Behavioral Health
Marcia Hefker is a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and Family Nurse Practitioner with 30 years of experience — most of it spent in places where the nearest Starbucks is a solid two-hour drive. Her career has been dedicated to rural and underserved communities across New Mexico, Colorado, Idaho, and Alaska. She currently serves as the Psychiatric Clinical Lead for Maniilaq Health Center in Kotzebue, Alaska, providing behavioral health services to remote Arctic communities in the Northwest Arctic Borough. Closer to home, she founded RxTeq Behavioral Health to bring comprehensive psychiatry and mental health services to northern New Mexico. Dr. Hefker specializes in substance use recovery treatment and general psychiatry. Her approach is straightforward: treat quickly, treat effectively, and meet patients exactly where they are. She’s a strong advocate for telehealth — not because she dislikes leaving the house, but because more frequent visits mean faster progress and better outcomes. When patients can connect from wherever they are, care stops being something that happens once a month and starts being something that actually keeps up with real life. When she’s not seeing patients, there’s a good chance she’s somewhere outside doing something most people would consider unreasonable. She’s an endurance horse racer, Continental Divide Trail backpacker, skier, and trail runner. In 2016, she competed in the Mongol Derby — a 1,000-kilometer race across the Mongolian steppe on semi-wild horses — and crossed the finish line first in a three-way tie after seven days in the saddle. It remains the world’s longest and toughest horse race. She has lived in New Mexico her entire life and calls the rural Sangre de Cristo Mountains home. She is currently accepting new patients — and promises she’s much easier to get along with than a feral Mongolian pony.
